What ceramic do I choose for my personalized dinnerware and mugs?

Are you looking for printed mugs or personalized dinnerware? Then you have to make a choice whether you want mugs or other tableware made of ceramic, pottery or porcelain? But, what is the difference between these materials and which one is best to choose? We explain it here!

Terminology

Before we can discuss the pros and cons, let's give an overview of the different terms.

Ceramics

Ceramic is the umbrella term for all types baked from clay or earth. Within this term, you have three groups: porcelain, pottery and stoneware.

Porcelain

Porcelain is technically a more expensive version of ceramic. This is because it is manufactured at a high temperature (1,300-1,500°C). Porcelain material has a refined, luxurious appearance and is lighter. This is not to say that the sturdiness is reduced, quite the contrary! Porcelain is the strongest type of ceramic.

Pottery

Pottery is manufactured at a lower temperature (800-1,150 °C). For this reason, it is softer than porcelain. It has a somewhat more robust appearance, giving the appearance of being more solid. Pottery is a less durable form of porcelain.

Stoneware

Stoneware is common and is baked at a temperature of 1,200°C. It is made of clay with a fine grain. Stoneware is between porcelain and pottery in terms of strength and durability.

Glaze

Glaze is poured over fired materials (ceramics) for several reasons:

  • Protecting : it protects ceramics from scratches and liquids.
  • Decorating : the glaze gives ceramics a beautiful appearance. You have reactive glaze which ensures that certain color effects occur due to chemical reactions. You also have matte glaze, this of course provides a matte appearance.

Advantages and disadvantages

Now that there's no more confusion between all the terms and you're a real expert. It's useful to take a moment to list the pros and cons of the different groups of ceramics.

Porcelain is highly recommended for catering or everyday use because it is long-lasting, light and sturdy. For bowls or bags that you use occasionally (for example, decorative tableware for snacks during the holidays), pottery or stoneware is of sufficient quality.
