The flag of Italy is a tricolor with three equally wide vertical stripes consisting of the colors green, white and red. The Italian flag is also called "Il Tricolore". The three colors are typical Milanese colors. Red and white come from the Milanese coat of arms, and green was the color of the Milanese Civil Guard. No official symbolism has been assigned to the colors. Some Italians refer to teleological virtues by the colors, with green representing hope, white representing conviction and red representing charity. Others, in turn, refer to Italian cuisine. Green for basil, white for mozzarella and red for tomato.
