What happens if nobody is present to receive the delivery?

Last updated on

Your order has been sent and you are impatiently waiting at the door for the delivery guy or girl. Unfortunately, not everyone has the luxury to camp at the front door all day. A logical question arises: what happens if nobody is home to receive your order? As we work with different transport companies for our deliveries, the following results of this situation may (slightly) differ.

First delivery attempt failed

In general, you will find a note in your mailbox, stating that they tried to deliver your package. On the note you will find instructions about what to do. In most cases you don't have to do anything, and the package is delivered again the next day. In some cases, e.g. PostNL, you will find a "not-home code" that you must use on their website to schedule a second delivery. If you have not received a note, you can assume that your package will be delivered again the next business day.

What if multiple delivery attempts failed?

Each transport company will try to deliver your order several times. But of course, parcel services will not continue to try forever. After 2 or 4 delivery attempts (the number is determined by the transport company), most transport companies will do one of the following things:

  • Your order will be returned to the sender. In that case, please contact us and we will resend your order.
Note: additional costs may be charged here.
  • Your order will be taken to a pickup point (e.g.: DPD parcel point or UPS access point), where you can pick it up. Note: Do not forget to bring your ID and the note you found in your mailbox!

In both cases you will receive a note in your mailbox with a clarification about what is happening with your order.

Note for the delivery guy or girl

If you know that you will not be home to receive the delivery, you can leave a note for the delivery guy or girl, stating that he/she can drop the package off at the neighbor's house. However, there is no guarantee that the delivery guy or girl will read and follow the instructions on the note. But there’s no harm in trying.
